Our Mission

The mission of Haiti Plunge, Inc. is to educate, challenge and empower both American and Haitian youth in social, educational and agricultural sustainable development in rural Haiti. The organization is committed to enabling young people to make a difference with their lives and be of service to others.

Matwons are Haiti’s traditional birth attendants. Throughout the country more than 60% of all births are guided by a matwon. In 2018-19, HPI hired a teacher from Midwives for Haiti (an organization specializing in training midwives and matwons) to bring a formal training to the people in the nine villages served.  This intensive training course educates matwons in the key points of maternal health/delivery and emergencies, including breech and umbilical cord emergencies. These trained matwons now provide:

  • Prenatal and postnatal care
  • Deliveries
  • Home Visits
  • Maternal health and sexual health education
  • Newborn Care, Family Planning

The curriculum is built around oral teaching, including use of pictures and models, and teaching songs to help memorize safe birth practices. The program is a 22 session-curriculum. HPI gifts each graduate with a book pictured below. This gift is published and distributed by Hesperian Health Guides and is recognized as an intrigal course guide by the World Health Organization.

Currently, HPI has partnered with Dr Gabrielle Cajuste to teach the 2020 class.
