Pillowcase Dresses

for Haiti

For over 10 years, pillowcase dresses have been making a positive difference for thousands of girls in developing countries.  These bright, colorful dresses provide much-needed clothing, as well as dignity and hope for many who have so little.

In summer 2019, after learning of this program, Pillowcase Dresses for Haiti was launched.  Since then, a small group of sewers from our Catholic parishes and the community have created over 200 dresses for several villages serviced by the Haiti Plunge.  These dresses have been welcomed enthusiastically and created excitement for recipients, bringing smiles of delight to the girls.

The joy provided to both recipients and sewers has created a desire to expand the program to other villages.  To do this requires more sewers. You do not have to be an expert seamstress to make a pillowcase dress.  The simplicity of design renders it doable for anyone who can sew a seam.  While they can be made from a length of fabric or a pillowcase, they are not costly to make and launder easily.  When girls grow too tall to wear them as dresses, they look very nice as tops.

There are many sites online that provide patterns and tutorials for beginners. Just Google “pillowcase dresses.”  If you are interested in joining this mission or would like more information or help to get started, please do not hesitate to contact Sr. Eunice Tassone at thehaitiplunge@gmail.com Completed dresses can be dropped off or picked up by contacting Sr. Eunice. If you are not a sewer, but would like to help out in other ways, donations of fabric, pillowcases (new or very gently used), and trims are most welcome, as are monetary donations to purchase supplies.
